Nissan is proud to be a part of the vibrant and growing economy of Rutherford County. The Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly and Battery Plant have been closely engaged with the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce and Destination Rutherford, as the plants have grown to support more than 8,000 jobs and six different vehicle models. When I began working at the Nissan plant in 1983, Smyrna was still a small town and Rutherford County was relatively rural. Today, this area maintains its small town feel, while playing host to world class companies and the state’s largest undergraduate university, Middle Tennessee State University. Rutherford works.

Destination Rutherford was created 12 years ago to drive economic growth in Rutherford County. Certainly this dynamic partnership between our local governments and the business community has proven to be highly successful as today, Rutherford County is recognized as one of the fastest growing communities for job creation in the nation. I have had the privilege to be a part of Destination Rutherford since its inception and have seen what is important to local businesses wanting to grow and expand as well as potential new economic development targets and opportunities. I believe whether expanding your business or starting something new, Rutherford County has the right location, the right workforce and the right business climate for success.

Candace Jernigan knows the importance of Career and Technical Education. In fall 2006, she took a Medical Therapeutics class at Smyrna High School and began working at the Kmart Pharmacy in Smyrna, TN. These opportunities sparked an interest in Candace to pursue a career in pharmacy. Her high school Career and Technical Education teacher introduced her to the Director of Pharmacy at TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center who suggested that she spend her internship shadowing the pharmacists at the hospital. After graduating as valedictorian and student body president from Smyrna High School, Candace began her undergraduate work at Lipscomb University and then entered Lipscomb’s College of Pharmacy. Candace is now the pharmacy manager for a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Murfreesboro, TN. Candace says, “By taking these courses in high school, I was given the opportunity to shadow pharmacists and exposure on how a hospital pharmacy worked. Due to these courses and my part-time job, I was able to figure out at the age of 16 that I wanted to become a pharmacist.”

In 2013 Schwan Cosmetics, the world leader in development and production of cosmetic pencils, was in search of a location for our new U.S. Headquarters. We researched several states and cities both in the Northeast and Southern United States. As both a creator of innovative products and USA manufacturer, we needed an area which offered a strong workforce over a broad spectrum of expertise; from Research Chemists to Mechatronics Certified Mechanics. We determined Rutherford County uniquely met our needs. MTSU, with its new science facility and strong science curriculum, offering both advanced and technical degrees, added an over-the-top advantage to locating in Rutherford County. Other educational facilities, such as TCAT and Motlow, offer technical degrees at times and locations convenient for our workforce. Schwan Cosmetics USA is under construction and we will begin moving into our new 173,000 sq ft facility in March, 2015.

  • Workforce Readiness

Workforce Readiness begins with Career & Technical Education

Career and Technical Education is the foundation upon which high school students will build their careers. Whether they plan to transition to a post-secondary technical school, to a university, or directly into the workforce, CTE gives students the preparation that is critical to their success. CTE is a partnership of students, instructors, and industry, which assures that programs are relevant. As an IT instructor in an area that is ranked 4th in the nation in IT job growth, I feel a great responsibility to help my students acquire the skills necessary to fill the need for qualified employees in Rutherford County and across Middle Tennessee.
