(Rutherford County, TN) – Over a two-week span, more than 4,000 eighth-grade students from Rutherford County middle schools previewed career and technical education (CTE) classes and potential careers before selecting their high school pathways.

The process began with students completing the YouScience aptitude assessment in early January, which paired their talents and interests with custom-fit career pathways. Rutherford County School staff then matched their top four pathways with classes at their zoned high schools. On the day of the event, students rotated between the corresponding classes, where they learned about Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, met with teachers, heard from high school students, and were introduced to industry professionals.

“There was nothing like this when I was in middle school,” remarked Lynn Jacobs, instructional coach at Daniel Mckee Alternative School. “I think this is a wonderful opportunity,” she continued.

Because middle school students select their freshman electives in the spring and are required to take three classes in a specific focus area to graduate, RCS district staff and Rutherford Works decided to host the event right before students select their freshman classes. They may focus in math and science, career and technical education (CTE), fine arts, humanities, advanced placement (AP) or international baccalaureate (IB) in addition to their core classes.

“CTE students have higher overall graduation rates and can graduate with credentials and certifications that set them apart when applying for college and employment,” stated Tyra Pilgrim, Rutherford County Schools CTE director. “College isn’t the end goal; a successful career is.”

Students were encouraged to take notes and talk to guardians, teachers and counselors about their choices so they can make the best decisions when selecting classes.
