What do Murfreesboro and Rutherford County at large have to offer those who love recreation and the outdoors? From local parks and public sports for all ages to food truck events and farmer’s markets, there are truly endless opportunities for individuals and families alike!

Rutherford Works has compiled a list of some of our favorite events coming up this spring and summer, along with golf courses, trails, parks, and playgrounds open year-round.

Events

Cannonsburgh Village

The historic Cannonsburgh Village represents 100 years of early Tennessee life spanning from the 1830s to the 1930s and offers a variety of activities for individuals and groups of all ages. Within the village is a gristmill, school house, a telephone operator’s house, the University House, the Leeman House, a museum, a caboose, the Wedding Chapel, a doctor’s office, a general store, a blacksmith’s shop, and the World’s Largest Cedar Bucket.

A few regular events include blacksmithing demonstrations and sewing skills workshops. A special event coming June 7 is “Story Time and I Spy.” View the Cannonsburgh Village events calendar for more information regarding programs and events.

Friday Night Live!

The Friday Nights 2022 Summer Series, offered from June to September, is held on Main Street in Murfreesboro outside the courthouse. It’s a free musical party! The series kicks-off June 3 at 6:30 p.m. and is free to the public.

Each Friday from April through October, the best food trucks, as well as local businesses, in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County set-up shop in Cannonsburgh Village! Saturday Farmer’s Market

The Main Street Saturday Farmer’s Market is hosted in the downtown Murfreesboro square every Saturday beginning May 21. Enjoy real farmers, real food, and real community! Visit their Facebook Page for more information.

Secret Garden Tours

Interested in strolling through the intimate and elaborate gardens of local homes around Murfreesboro? Sign up for a Secret Garden Tour! This summer’s will be Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, June 5, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person and all proceeds benefit the Murfreesboro Discovery Center.

Tennessee Livestock Center

The Tennessee Livestock Center is a 155,000-square-foot arena on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University. The center draws more than 100,000 people annually from across the U.S. for livestock shows and sales, rodeos, equestrian events, and festivals that take place almost every weekend.

Golf Courses

Champions Run Golf Course

Located in Rockvale, the Championship Run Golf Course features 18 holes and 16 bunkers. The course also provides a full-service food and beverage operation with a full menu to fit anyone’s appetite.

Indian Hills Golf Course

Indian Hills Golf Course is an 18-hole public facility open year-round that offers a resort style atmosphere in Murfreesboro and an award-winning golf academy. Indian Hills also features an indoor learning center, an extensive practice facility featuring a putting green, chipping green, and a driving range with target greens, as well as Jack’s Grill located in the clubhouse.

Old Fort Golf Club

Regarded as one of the top public golf courses in the state, the Old Fort Golf Club course surrounds a historic fort used during the American Civil War and offers golf instruction, club fitting, youth golf programs, men’s/women’s/senior’s leagues, golf clinics, and more. The club offers affordable fees and cart rentals and a FREEquent Player Program.

Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 7 a.m. to dark, and Monday 9 a.m. to dark. 

Smyrna Golf Course

Smyrna Golf Course has an 18-hole regulation golf course, a 9-hole executive course recognized as a First Tee facility, an 8,000-square-foot putting green, driving range, practice facility, and pitching green. Unique to Smyrna Golf Course is foot golf – a combination of golf and soccer!

Hours: Open at 7:30 a.m. with the first tee time at 8 a.m. Closes at 6 p.m. 

Trails, Parks, and Playgrounds

Adams Tennis Complex

Adams Tennis Complex is part of the City of Murfreesboro parks and recreation system with 24 outdoor tennis courts and eight indoor courts. The complex offers tennis camps for youth, adult leagues, and memberships. Non-members may also rent courts, depending upon availability.

Barfield Crescent Park

In addition to the 8-field baseball and softball complex, the Barfield Crescent Park features an 18-hole disc golf championship course, picnic shelters, seven miles of paved and unpaved walking and jogging trails, mountain bike trails, 12 private campsites and one group campsite, a Murfreesboro Greenway trailhead, two playgrounds, a grass volleyball court, horseshoe pits, tetherball, and the Wilderness Station.

Hours: Open year-round from sunrise to sunset daily. 

Fountains at Gateway Splash Pad

Enjoy water fun and more at the Fountains at Gateway Splash Pad. While spending the day with your kids at the splash pad, you can grab a meal from an onsite eatery or have a picnic lunch on the plaza. During the summer, watch a movie during the Move Under the Stars series, or listen to live musicians on the Pocket Park Stage! Pets are also allowed at Fountains (they just must be kept on a leash). Hours: Open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. 

Go USA Fun Park

The Go USA Fun Park’s outdoor offerings include batting cages, a driving range, and mini golf.

Hours: Open 7 days a week beginning at 10 a.m., and at 9 a.m. on Saturdays.

Lee Victory Park

Located in Smyrna, Lee Victory Park features two playgrounds with volleyball and tennis courts, baseball, softball, and football fields, concession areas and pavilions. It is also a popular trailhead for the Smyrna Greenway System. The newly installed Freedom Playground on the grounds is an all-inclusive playground that accommodates all ages and abilities.

Hours: Park hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily; public restrooms close at 8 p.m.

McKnight Park

An 81-acre community park and home to the Sports*Com multipurpose facility, McKnight Park includes the David Price Miracle Field (a special needs baseball and playground facility designed for inclusive play for all ages and capabilities), multipurpose fields used for youth football, lacrosse, youth soccer, adult soccer, disc golf, and a sheltered picnic area.

Hours: Open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Murfreesboro Greenway System

The Murfreesboro Greenway System consists of 15 miles of trails, bridges, and boardwalks for enjoying Murfreesboro’s beautiful natural setting. Sixteen trailheads provide access for hiking, walking, running, wading, bicycling, skating, nature photography, picnicking, birdwatching, fishing, and many other outdoor activities for individuals of all abilities.

The Murfreesboro Greenway System also has two dog parks and three small watercraft launch points (two on the West Fork Stones River and one on the East Fork Stones River) for paddlers to access the Stones River.

Hours: All Greenway trailheads open at daylight and close 1/2 hour before sunset daily year-round. Gateway Island and Trail are open 6 a.m. – 10 p.m.

Sharp Springs Park

Located in Smyrna and part of the Smyrna Greenway, Sharp Springs Park features five pavilions, picnic tables and grills, an 18-hole disc golf course, dog park, four fishing piers, sports practice fields, and a bird blind.

Hours: Open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. March through October.
